M ore succulents! And a couple of great Half Moon Bay nurseries where you can get them for creating your own succulent dream.
We visited Highway 92 Succulents on the day when all my complaining about restrooms being "CLOSED TO PUBLIC" began.
No worries now. All is good.
On Hwy 92 as you enter Half Moon Bay (California), you'll first hit fabulous Half Moon Bay Nursery which I'll post about soon. Just a mile further on—in old rustic greenhouse-style buildings—you'll find Highway 92 Succulents alongside a whole row of nurseries!
I’d call that pretty close to heaven! And you cannot beat Half Moon Bay weather.
Due to COVID (and all!), on that particular day only a few nurseries were open. The first one on our itinerary was closed even though we called in advance—so annoying! So Aunt Patti and I arrived at Highway 92 Succulents before its doors opened for the day.
We waited very patiently like those old Mervyn’s commercials with the lady who stands outside repeating "Open. Open. Open." When finally they did open...OMG!!!
I don't need to tell you that we both found plenty of succulents we just couldn’t live without.
Though, see below. I think someone there has way too much time on their hands. Just sayin'...
Enjoy a few of my favorites, purchased—except where noted—at Highway 92 Succulents.
FROM LEFT: Mangave ‘Purple People Eater,’ Yucca glorisa ‘Tricolor’ (Berkeley Horticulture Nursery), Agave filifera schidigera ‘White Stripe,’ Agave ‘Blue Glow’ (Cottage Gardens)
Aeonium ‘Suncup,’ Senecio kleiniiformis ‘Spearhead,’ Euphorbia trigonia var. rubra
Othonna capensis ‘Little Pickles’, Aeonium ‘Mardi Gras’
Ms. "I-Don’t-Need-Another-Succulent" Aunt Patti bought Crassula pellucida ‘Variegata’ (Calico Kitten), Sedum ‘Spiral Staircase’, and Aeonium lindleyi var. viscatum ‘Irish Bouquet.’ But if you want photos of these, talk to HER. She was too busy in her garden to take any, and remember she is retired and considers taking photos work.
Honestly, what IS challenging is to go out into our gardens and locate our succulents for photos—like needles in haystacks because some are very small, and one succulent almost looks like the other.
Ready for even More Succulents? On to Seascape Succulents Nursery...

This little nursery popped up in 2016. Mind you, it is located in a "parking lot" behind a commercial building and has only an itty bitty sign out at the far end of Main Street to let you know you've arrived. You blink, you miss it.
In fact we had to make a few U-turns because the address and the actual spot do not match up, making Aunt Patti very flustered.
Sometimes, gawd, it can be exhausting to find these out-of-the-way nurseries but—not wanting to miss our waltzing through a nursery we've set our sights on—we are persistent! And just look what it got us this time...
If you want your succulents to look this fabulous, here is my advice. Move to the coast or anywhere with cooler weather and no frost. Rules out where I live!
Clients once showed me a photo—like the one above—of succulents they wanted included in their succulent garden. I just looked at them and, LMAO, I thought to myself, "Are you high?! I don’t see any oceans nearby!” But I said something probably like I say to Aunt Patti: "No. That plant won't work."
FYI, I get compliments for being honest, blunt and straightforward. I call it "passion." Others have a different name for it, lol.
Look at that flower stalk!!! Amazing!
All succulents sold at Seascape are home grown by the owner. Prices are a little higher than the norm, but the succulents are of excellent quality and size/age.
I’d go back. Of course!
We can’t all have an ocean in our backyard like Highway 92 Succulents and Seascape Succulent Nursery. But if you’ve got a spot with morning sun, a little heat and protection from frost, you can have a successful succulent garden. May not grow as full and beautiful as these, but one can dream.
One can also take a day to visit the incredible nurseries of Half Moon Bay!
